This old steam engine, belonging to the Rescue Fire Company of Cambridge, is at the scene of the Academy fire in the Dorchester County seat about 1902.

Since Chesapeake Publishing announced that it will soon cease printing operations in Cecil County, bringing a nearly 200 year chapter of newspaper history to a close, this photo of the modern 1950s printing plant at the Cecil Whig caught our attention. In the post World War II period, as the county’s weekly newspaper started a period of rapid growth, the paper built a modern office and printing plant on Bridge Street. Ted Brown, a longtime employee of the paper, demonstrates the linotype, the latest in production technology, which allowed a better quality product to get into print faster.
